Our History

In October 2012, our thrift family grew as the Unique Thrift Stores in Chicago & Cleveland were acquired by Savers.  Savers, like Unique, has a long and successful history in the thrift industry.  Click on Savers for more information about this organization.

Prior to joining Savers, Unique was a family owned business operating under the corporate name of Nandorf, Inc and doing business under the retail name of Unique Thrift Stores operating thrift stores in Illinois and Ohio.  The first thrift store opened in Chicago in 1970 and in Cleveland in 1984.  Today, we 16 stores for your shopping options.

Thrift stores have been in our family DNA for a long time.  Our founders’ uncles were instrumental in helping set up the thrift division of the Salvation Army, starting at the time of the Great Depression.  As a family, we are proud that our business has withstood the test of time and that we have played an important role in supporting neighborhoods with quality resale items at affordable prices, in addition to benefiting our charity partners and vendors, as well as the environment by investing in reusing and recycling long before this became an environmental imperative.
